The map rendering is all done via software, couldn't some form of hardware acceleration be used?

I've done some experiments with JOGL and the program I'm attaching. From my simple benchmark, I obtain that OpenGL is able to draw segments about 3 times faster and to fill polygons about from 10 to 15 times faster.
