This seems to be true for all mbtiles files; I've tried about four, on two different machines (one completely clean install).

This is still true for the latest dev version, 8465. Is there any log or debug output I could help you with to work on a fix? This is a high priority issue for us in the field (http://ramanihuria.org/), since we're relying on mbtiles in the absence of workable internet access to access aerial imagery..
